libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file

 Q: On a new linux system, trying to run gdb for the first time and get:

./powerpc-ose-gdb: error while loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

When I run "locate libz.so.1" it is found in /usr/lib64, so what is the problem?

A: The problem is, on a 64-bit system, you probably need the 32-bit version of the library. (Many items in the toolset are going through porting to 64-bit at this time.) Try installing "libz.i386" or "libz.i686", whichever one works for your yum/rpm installer.
